Bedlington Terrier
True Terrier Temperament with Pluck.
The history and ancestry of the Bedlington Terrier
are somewhat obscure. At one time, in the mid, to late
1800s he was known as the "Rothbury Terrier" and came
from the mining shire of Bedlington, in Northumberland,
England. It is agreed that Whippet blood was crossed with
this Rothbury Terrier and about then he became known as
the Bedlington, the sequence of events being unclear.
The Bedlington Terrier created was one of the gamest
of terriers, able to catch a rabbit and swim down the otter.
Since those early days, the breed has been refined to a well
mannered, well-balanced, gentle, graceful dog. He comes
in two distinct colors, liver and blue, a mixture of hard and
soft coat that stands well out from the skin. Grooming is
by scissors and is said to be easier than imagined. He is
an excellent watchdog and is considered good with
children, a beautiful family companion, alert and
loaded with courage. As with most breeds,
a Bedlington Terrier puppy would
benefit by obedience training. |
