Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen
An Alert Outlook and Lively Bearing
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is the smallest of
four wire coated Griffon Vendeen breeds. It originated in
the area of France known as Vendéen. They were bred to be
small, low set, (Petit Basset) hunting dogs with thick, rough
wiry coats in order to easily penetrate dense brush cover and
flush out rabbits, fox, deer and wild boar. As a hunting dog,
the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is resolute, dauntless and
eager. He was used to hunt alone or in small packs.
Their nickname is PBGV for obvious reasons. The
PBGV is bold and vivacious in character and compact, tough
and robust in its build. With head carried proudly high, the
rather random, disheveled appearance, hairy moustache and
beard are characteristics of mythological remarkable Griffons,
but the temperament and demeanor of this happy playful
gregarious little dog is anything but frightening.
A large apartment or small house is sufficient space
for the PBGV and exercise needs are about 15 - 20 minutes
four times a day. The PBGV, although quite hairy, does not
shed a lot, so grooming once a week is enough. The PBGV
is good with children and it bonds to the whole family,
making a PBGV puppy a great family addition. |
