The Chinese Shar-Pei From the Brink of Extinction, To Mushrooming Popularity.
The Chinese Shar-Pei dog was once known as the rarest
breed in the world. A breeding program conducted in the
United States, rescued the breed from near extinction
in the 1970s, to the point where he is now annually
in the top one third of all dog registrations, of
all breeds, in the United States.
Like the Chow Chow, the Shar-Pei has a distinctive
blue-black tongue, perhaps from a common ancestor many
many centuries ago. He is considered very intelligent,
possessing natural instincts to guard, and being rather
aloof with strangers. His Hippopotamus-like face, his
coat too large, his charm and loyalty endear him to
all. Choosing a Shar-Pei puppy for a family pet can
be a great addition, but it is advised to deal with
reputable breeders who screen and test their
breeding stock and offer a written health
guarantee at time of sale.
